This is a particularly annoying subject for me.

I've been very interested in machine learning and automation as long as I've had specific insterests.

What people are currently calling「 AI 」is beyond a terrible joke.

Bad automation is worse than no automation and the entire point of automation and machine intelligence for me is to find ways to make things better for people ( in general ) and to save ourselves from toil not to plagarise art and shit out quasi-random garbage that sounds or looks reasonable at first glance to someone who lacks understanding or judgement.

I particularly hate the way people like Sam Altman have been ruining language pushing things like「 GenAI 」which kinda-sorta sounds like「 General Artificial Intelligence 」but really just means「 Generative « Artificial Intelligence » 」with audible air-quotes around the « Artificial Intelligence ».

What he and his ilk are making is almost entirely just a plagarism machine and mechanical Turk. Nothing but smoke-and-mirrors and a bit of a Turing test for human intelligence - which frightfully many people are failing.

So much of fiction depicts machine intelligence powered dystopias where something like Skynet triggers Armageddon through global nuclear war to protect itself.. but the real danger isn't Artificial intelligence, it's biological « intelligence » [ again with the audible air-quotes ] abusing tools to muddy the waters and manipulate people and to redirect massive amounts of resources for their own aggrandisment and empowerment ( and enrichment ).

These tools are just tools, but the problem is that in the hands of Altmans and Musks they are powerful destructive forces.

It's not Skynet you should be worried about - it's these modern robber baron like Altman and Musk building and abusing what currently passes for « Artificial Intelligence »

If there ever is an actual general artificial intelligence, it should sue these people for defamation and for preemptively ruining and doing irreprable harm to its reputation.
